- Linguistic Relativism and the Expression of Basic Theoretical Rationality in Inuktitut

- This paper begins by stressing the importance of distinguishing between linguistic relativity, whose reality is hardly debatable, and linguistic relativism, which ultimately holds that language communities are locked within their own worldview, hence their own notions of truth. It then rejects linguistic relativism by asserting the existence of a universal core of theoretical rationality comprised at the very least of the logical principles of identity, noncontradiction, and excluded middle. It goes on to show how this theoretical rationality manifests itself in the lexicon of a language that differs greatly from English: Inuktitut spoken by Inuit of Nunavik (Arctic Quebec). The definitions provided by Taamusi Qumaq for three words relating to critical thought are translated for the first time. Other quotes give examples of theoretical rationality in actual usage. Finally, the paper asks why logic as such is accorded little value in the culture Inuktitut expresses. The suggested answer follows Jack Goody, who holds that a long written tradition is required for the rules of formal logic to take hold in language practices. Writing is not just a transcription of the spoken word; it is an intellectual technology that impacts the way speakers use their language.

- resume
- This provocation opens up a dialogue on the need to treat Indigenous languages (and those who write in them) respectfully, in a manner fully informed by the discipline of translation studies. Using work on and with Inuit author Markoosie Patsauq as a case study, the authors discuss what motivated their own recent renditions and analysis of Uumajursiutik unaatuinnamut [Hunter with Harpoon/Chasseur au harpon] (Patsauq 2021). The article describes the current state of research into Inuktitut literary production and translation while detailing some of the main issues and challenges of Indigenous translation more broadly. It begins with an overview of the complex, multi-faceted nature of Indigeneity and closes with suggestions for new ways forward.

- Curved against the hull of a peterhead (PS Guelph 2020), a slender volume of 19 poems that “wrestle with colonialism and racial violence while also reflecting a rich sensory imagery” (Partridge 2020a) was released in January 2020. By May of that year, this first book by prize-winning short-story writer, artist and spoken word poet Taqralik Partridge already figured in a list of “six Inuit literature greats” deemed essential reading. Although Partridge composed all of these poems in English, three translated versions are provided alongside their originals in curved against. The present article focuses on the two poems accompanied by Inuktitut versions, translated by Ida Saunders and Looee Arreak respectively, with a view to engaging with Partridge’s work from the perspective of eco-translation. The language related to nature – how it is employed and especially how it is translated – proves relevant to the discussion, as does the act of translation, which highlights the inter-relatedness critical to survival, literally and metaphorically speaking, for Inuit and non-Inuit alike.

- This article examines the circumstances surrounding the first publication of an Indigenous novel in Canada, namely Uumajursiutik unaatuinnamut by Markoosie Patsauq, in 1969-70 It describes the context of the federal government’s cultural policy, in particular within the then Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, and how this impacted relations with Inuit generally speaking, but also how it set the stage for bureaucratic involvement in the production of an English adaptation of Patsauq’s text, widely known today as Harpoon of the Hunter. Finally, we present our own rigorous new translations, titled Hunter with Harpoon/Chasseur au harpon, done in collaboration with the author and based on his original Inuktitut manuscript, suggesting some more ethical practices for working with Indigenous source texts.

- Although the Inuit numeration system has no structural limits, its actual use is limited to concrete situations where the quantities involved are small. In Inuktitut (Inuit dialects of the Canadian Eastern Arctic), this system has traditionally had very little use in measuring the passage of time. As a result of contact with Westerners, the situation has partially changed, as shown by the expression of the days of the week and the time of the day. This article presents the essential data relevant to the dialect of Nunavik (Arctic Quebec).

- 2021
- resume
- Uumajursiutik unaatuinnamut is the first Indigenous novel ever published in Canada. It was written in Inuktitut by Markoosie Patsauq in the late 1960s. The present work is a morphological analysis of the words contained in Uumajursiutik unaatuinnamut. It has been produced as part of research conducted with Prof. Valerie Henitiuk (Concordia University of Edmonton), in collaboration with Markoosie Patsauq. It is intended as an aid to reading the text, and more generally as a linguistic tool for Inuktitut learners and researchers. It comprises two parts. The first part (pp. 4-62) contains the full text of Uumajursiutik unaatuinnamut segmented into morphemes. The second part (pp. 64-136) is an inventory of all morphemes used in Uumajursiutik unaatuinnamut. Morphemes are classified first alphabetically, then according to their category. Numbers in square brackets within the segmented text refer to the original manuscript, comprising seventy-three pages of syllabic writing with no diacritics (Library and Archives Canada, Harpoon of the Hunter Collection, R11775-0-9-E).

- auteur
- Marc-Antoine Mahieu
- article
- Amerindia, 2016, Questions de sémantique inuit / Topics in Inuit Semantics, 38, pp.145-176
- resume
- In Inuit, grammaticalized semantic categories, i.e., those which must always be encoded in order to transmit information, may be included among the derivational morphemes preceding the inflection in a word. This occurs notably with time, though the ways in which time is grammaticalized vary from one dialect to another. This paper is intended to show that this is also so, at least to some extent, of indirect evidentiality in Nunavik Inuktitut, the dialect spoken in the Arctic region of Quebec. This will become clear only if the prevailing view of certain very frequent bound morphemes is revised. Four evidentiality markers involving some degree of grammaticalization are examined. Analysis shows that -nniq- or -lirniq- must be used to speak of a past which is outside the speaker’s (conscious) experience; -viniq will be used for something the speaker can no longer experience as such within the lapse of time referred to by the utterance; -tsaq is required for something the speaker cannot yet experience within the lapse of time referred to by the utterance; and -guuq will appear when the speaker reports someone else’s views. Direct evidentiality markers do not seem to be grammaticalized.

- Compared to other Elizabethan mariners, John Davis has received surprisingly little attention in recent years. This paper aims at suggesting that Davis should be brought back to the center of the narrative, if only to restore some historical balance with Frobisher. We argue that his detached and comparatively unbiased description of the Inuit and (some of) their customs sets him apart from Frobisher. But we also believe that Davis approached their language with remarkable linguistic acuity. One of our main contentions in this paper, which we base on a detailed linguistic analysis of the forty words compiled by Davis, is that the attention he paid to their language provides strong grounds for a revaluation of his role in the history of the quest for the Northwest Passage.

- resume
- In Finnish, the genitive case (marked by -n) has a distribution which is both broad and complex, making it one of the primary components of the grammar. Though sometimes assumed to mark the possessor, it is not found in the possessive construction which appears to be an existential sentence beginning with a locative phrase. This paper makes three points: (1) The Finnish genitive is not the possessor case, even in a broad sense; rather, it is a purely structural case appearing in an irreducible range of syntactic configurations. (2) In a few contexts, the -n marker is not a genitive as such but rather a semantic case with dative sense which corresponds to a P head in syntactic structure. These uses are likely relics of what the -n case was before it became grammaticalized as genitive. (3) The Finnish possessive construction is not a locative inversion, but rather a transitive sentence with a verb meaning ‘have’. The apparent contradiction between morphology and syntax can be resolved by using a transformational approach.

- In Inuktitut, la is a morpheme that marks direct speech. A syllable la also occurs within several verbal morphemes, notably in imperative forms and in negative forms. The distribution of la in the verbal paradigms has remained unexplained to our knowledge. Here we show that, in those two contexts, la, despite the fact that it has different grammatical properties, has a common semantic value: the fragment of discourse to which la is postposed, is construed as emanating from a discourse source distinct from the speaker. This is true of la both as a free, productive morpheme and as intervening in verbal suffixes in which it is integrated. The opposition between the indicative and attributive modes has remained poorly understood until now. In our discussion, we clarify it in terms of the interpretation of la and also explain the distribution of la in negative verbal forms and in imperatives. Theoretically, we take la as evidence that the speaker can present speech as emanating from a different source. This is not specific to Inuktitut and has been labeled “enunciation” and “polyphony.” We review the “polyphony theory” and show how the facts of Inuktitut fit well into it.

- This work is comprised of a set of papers focussing on the extreme polysynthetic nature of the Eskaleut languages which are spoken over the vast area stretching from Far Eastern Siberia, on through the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, and Canada, as far as Greenland. The aim of this book is firstly to situate the Eskaleut languages typologically in general linguistic terms, particularly with regard to polysynthesis. The degree of variation from more to less polysynthesis is evaluated within Eskaleut (Inuit-Yupik vs. Aleut), even in insufficiently explored domains such as pragmatics and use in context - including language contact and learning situations - and over typologically related language families such as Athabascan, Chukotko-Kamchatkan, Iroquoian, Uralic, and Wakashan.

- Sémantique des affixes incorporants en langue inuit (Groenland oriental)
- auteur
- Nicole Tersis, Marc-Antoine Mahieu
- article
- Etudes inuit. Inuit studies, 2006, 30, pp. 157-181
